Did you know that the average life expectancy for people in the US has pretty much doubled in the past 100 years? Right now, everybody is living longer. What are the secrets of longevity?
People are living to be 100, 103, 105 – and still enjoying life! Many are highly active and remain a valuable part of their communities.
Many factors affect life expectancy and longevity. These include things like genetics, gender, lifestyle, and diet. Perhaps mental attitude also plays a big role. With that in mind, does happiness lead to a longer life?
Happiness is number one secret of longevity!
There is absolutely no need to fall into the mistaken belief that getting older means becoming grumpier! Yes, we change physically, not always able to do the things we enjoyed in our youth. Yes, our cognitive abilities may not be what they used to be. However, happy aging is important and it is always attainable.
Happiness can be found many things, even the simple things in life. Including watching your favorite TV shows! Get involved in hobbies that you have enjoyed for years – or take up new ones. Getting a new haircut can give you a confidence boost. As too can enjoying family time where you get to be with people in your life who bring you joy.
Keep worries away
Stress and anxiety are no fun at any stage of life, and obviously not conducive to happy aging. The major concerns of older people often revolve around health, home, and/or family.
Taking steps to make sure we feel safe and secure in our daily lives helps alleviates much of this. Find health professionals who you trust for your medical care. Participate in day programs for social interaction. Make some small adaptations at home to help with any mobility needs.
Little things can help free us from our worries.
Well balanced eating
We are what we eat! A nutritional, balanced diet can help with longevity, keeping your bones strong, and your mind and body functioning.
Make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals. Eat appropriate portions of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. Another tip for happy aging – include your favorite recipes in your meal planning. Make meals an enjoyable taste sensation!
Get up and move
We are all biological machines. It makes sense that moving your body and mind on a regular basis keeps it from seizing up.
The old adage “if you don’t move it you lose it” is true! It does not have to mean spending hours at the gym. There are many activities to do in the guise of “exercise”. Do the things you love. Taking a walk around the block, making gentle movements to your favorite music, doing yoga stretches. All these things keep our bodies active and happy.
Try to keep your mind moving too. Play board or card games, do the crossword or other puzzles. An active and healthy body and mind is always going to help with happy aging.
